Adoption Support Counselling

Whether you’re an adoptee, an adoptive parent, a birth parent, or a special guardian, the impact of adoption can be huge. I provide counselling that is grounded in specialist training,  in a supportive, non judgemental space.

Adoption experiences are often rooted in difficult early experiences, and/or disrupted attachment to significant carers.  This is why I work from a trauma-informed and attachment-based approach. In counselling you will have the opportunity to share and make sense of your personal story, and explore how early relationships and life experiences shape your emotional world, helping you:

  • Process unresolved grief or confusion
  • Understand patterns in relationships
  • Rebuild trust and self-worth
  • Create new, more secure ways of relating—to others and to yourself

Specialist, Informed Support That Understands Adoption

It’s important, when seeking adoption counselling, to choose a counsellor who has completed specialist adoption support training.  My training was a specialist course co-written by Barnardo’s and The Albany Centre. This equips me to work with adults affected by adoption in a therapeutic way that meets the standards expected by English law and adoption services.

Alongside my training and experience as a counsellor I also bring over 20 years of previous experience working in statutory childcare settings, supporting families in a wide range of often complex situations. I also have personal experience of adoption through voluntary work.  These perspectives inform my work with empathy, realism, and deep respect for each person’s journey.

Support for All Adults Affected by Adoption or Special Guardianship Orders

Adoptees

You may be navigating questions of identity, origin, and belonging. Counselling can help you explore these themes, helping you to connect your story and build a strong, resilient sense of self.

Adoptive Parents

You may be coping with emotional challenges, behavioural concerns, or attachment issues in your family. Adoptive parents may also be processing losses of their own.  We can explore these together balancing your child’s needs with your own wellbeing.

Birth Parents

If your child has been adopted or made subject to a special guardianship order, you may experience some difficult emotions. Counselling provides a space to process these emotions with compassion and help you make choices for your future.

Special Guardians and Kinship Carers

Taking on the care of a child within your family can bring complex emotions and relationship dynamics. Counselling can help you manage these responsibilities with more clarity and support.
